Should We Open Our Doors to Refugees?

The United States has always been the land of the free and the home of the brave.  We have welcomed immigrants into America since the beginning of our country.  We are the land of opportunity and freedom, but are we really?  Has America changed?   When you listen to the news reports of all the riots against our law enforcement; when you see people marching in the streets because they feel they have been discriminated against; when you hear people cheer when politicians rant about making the rich pay their fair share; when 50% of our population is receiving some sort of government assistance; when our government officials can blatantly break one law after another and it is ignored, we have to ask the question:  what has happened to America?

I know I am dating myself but I remember well the day John F. Kennedy was assassinated.  It was a bleak day for America; a heartbreaking day.  I watched Jimmy Carter become one of the worst presidents in our history and I cried when Ronald Reagan left office and we were once again left to workings of the political establishment.  On September 11, 2001, I watched from my living room as two planes crashed into the Twin Towers and 3000 Americans were murdered. In 2008 I watched a crowd of people with burning candles, tear streaked faces and the chanting voices as Barack Obama became the first black President of the United States.

But what has really happened since that fateful day?  Barack Obama has done exactly what he promised.   That fundamental transformation of America is here and we don’t even know how it happened.

When Ronald Reagan took office in 1981, the nation was in shambles.  When an attempt was made to assassinate him shortly after that, Reagan’s life was never the same.  Yes, he became a great president but at what cost.  He was re-elected to a second term by a landside of 49 states.  I’m embarrassed to admit that Minnesota was the only opposing voice.  We had to support our native son, Walter Mondale.

Reagan’s legacy was cast aside quickly when Bill Clinton was elected to office in 1992 leaving George H Bush in the dust.  All of Clinton’s indiscretions seemed to be forgiven when his administration managed to balance the budget and things looked good.  Of course nobody knew how much had slipped under the radar and terrorists were already planning their attack on America.  When George W. Bush took office in 2001, he had no idea what was about to happen.

The events of 9/11 changed American’s forever and now some people are even blaming George Bush for that too.  We have to admit, he did keep us safe in the years following 9/11 but at what cost?  When Obama leaves office in 2017 (if he leaves office) can we expect another 9/11?  Do we really think that ISIS won’t strike here?  Of course not.  We all know they’re already here.

The other day I listened to an interview of Ben Carson where he was asked about the refugees and if he would allow them into the country if he were President.  It was an interesting answer as how does a man really know what he would do in the same position as Barack Obama.  Carson did say one thing that really got me thinking.  He said (and I paraphrase) considering all of the events currently happening in the Middle East and Europe, it would be a “suspension of intellect” to open our doors to them.   A suspension of intellect was no paraphrase but his exact words.

Are we in denial?  Do we have a suspension of intellect?  I don’t think so.  Americans know the answer.  They know our country is headed in the wrong direction. Our President gave a speech after the massacre in Paris and said “we have suffered a setback”.  Is he kidding?  A setback?  If our President does not awaken from his slumber and realize the wolves are at the door, may God have mercy on America.

Reagan’s life was changed forever when he was shot.  Our lives were changed forever on 9/11.  America will be changed forever if we do not take back our country.
